FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • ABOUT THE PROJECT
    • A community cultural hub is a place where artists, local residents, community leaders, organizations, governments and businesses combine their efforts to foster culture and community. There are many different types of community cultural hubs but they are often multi-tenant facilities including a range of components such as: artist studio space, galleries, theatres, rehearsal space, office space for arts, cultural and community-based organizations, and indoor and outdoor public programming spaces. The vision for a community cultural hub is best built from the ground up in response to the unique needs, challenges, dreams, and aspirations in the neighbourhoods where they are located.

    • BC Artscape's work falls within the growing sector of social purpose real estate, where properties and facilities are owned and/or operated by mission-driven organizations towards community benefit and blended value returns. Blended value returns is the idea that social purpose real estate projects can deliver multiple impacts beyond revenue generation, including social, cultural and environmental benefits.

    • BC Artscape Sun Wah is made possible through a long-term lease with the Sun Wah Group, owners of the Sun Wah Centre. Funds raised from public and private sources have contributed to the one-time capital investment required to renovate our spaces to meet the needs of the non-profit arts and cultural community. The operation of BC Artscape Sun Wah is sustained through planned revenues generated from below-market rents and a sliding scale of event and venue rental rates that accommodate the need and capacity of a wide range of users. This cost recovery operational model is designed to be self-sustaining without relying on ongoing public subsidy and any surplus is reinvested into the facility and its programming.
    • BC Artscape Sun Wah is located within the Sun Wah Centre at 268 Keefer Street. Opened in 1987, the Sun Wah Centre is a post-Expo, Hong Kong style mall in similar fashion to the Chinatown Plaza and International Village. A Chinese supermarket operated in its basement for a time before T&T took over the retail scene. Its fourth floor was designed to house a Chinese restaurant (think Floata), complete with a traditional round window, but was never occupied and has existed only in shell condition. In the Sun Wah’s early years, office spaces on the third floor were partially occupied by the Sun Wah Group, Scotiabank and an immigration services agency. Various retailers and organizations have called the ground and second floor home, including a flea market, jade and jewellery merchants, fashion retailers, Cute City Sales (toys and games store), Chinese Community Policing Centre and in recent years, WePress, Indian Summer Festival, and Vancity Originals. Meet Al Cheng, the Chinatown Flea Market owner and member of our community advisory committee here. Long-standing storefront tenants have included Scotiabank, and, up until recently, Hon’s Wun-Tun House, which was in the current Jang Mo Jib (Korean restaurant) space. The Sun Wah Centre was known in the community for its cheap parking rates, salmon and mint-green coloured interiors, escalators that may or may not run between floors, and, most importantly, its eclectic mix of entrepreneurs on the 2nd floor. The building continues to be part of the international conglomerate of the Sun Wah Group. Founded in 1957 as a small seafood company by Chairman Jonathan Choi's father, the Sun Wah Group has grown its divisions to include seafood and foodstuff, real estate, financial services, technology, media, infrastructure, as well as education and training in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Macau, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Singapore, Japan, Canada, USA and Australia.
